Guitar Skills to Learn and Master

Some people don't look at a guitar and get inspired to pick it up. Others have such a strong passion for guitar and music that they must pick it up and start playing every time they look at a guitar. If you feel like you are already bored with playing then let me try to get you inspired again with this article. There is so much ground to cover when it comes to playing and mastering guitar. You just don't see the true potential you have with it.

The best way to improve your playing is to play guitar by ear. You do this by simply listening to music and translating what you hear onto your guitar. Music is like a whole other language and your instrument is like your own voice that speaks the language. This is what musicians are very good at. You should not just think of yourself as a guitar player. Think of yourself as a musician.

Another way to get better at playing guitar is by studying guitar theory. There is a misconception that by learning guitar theory your playing will not be as good. So many beginners think that just because some of the most famous guitar players did not learn theory they don't have to either. Which is true but if you take the time to understand guitar theory then everything will start to click faster. Basically learning guitar theory is about having a deep understanding of the fretboard. You will understand how to play on your own. You can pick up songs right away because you will be able to tell what key they are in. Improvising is a powerful skill to have and that branches off of learning guitar theory.

Join a band. You might be so used to playing on your own that you shut off the idea of playing with others. But playing with a band will greatly improve your timing and rhythm. This is the base of being a professional musician. This is what musicians do. Who knows maybe you can get so good at performing that you and your band start getting paid to play at bars downtown. Playing in front of others is a big step for getting out of your comfort zone. Chances are you won't be that great at first but you should not give it up as it takes some time and effort.

Be sure to explore other guitar styles as well. Perhaps you are a great hard rock guitar player who can play a lot of classic rock solos. But you hardly ever play finger style guitar with an acoustic. Try it out. Spread your wings a bit not just with the different styles of guitar but also with the types of music there are. You can learn how to play Blues, Jazz, Classical, and even learn how to play pieces of music that are not originally played with a guitar.

Above everything else make sure to practice well. Like I said in the beginning of this article you should challenge yourself every practice session. This is how you will avoid boredom and actually look forward to playing so you progress. Do what you have to do to get inspired whether that means watching another great guitar player jam or listening to your favorite band. Don't limit yourself. You can play any piece of music on guitar. It just takes some quality practice.
