Music As Food For The Mind And Body

Do you know that music will not just entertain you, but can make you a much better person? There are three ways you can use music to accomplish this.

    Music For Motivation

Notice how your body rhythm keeps in step whenever you hear lively music. Using music to motivate yourself or change your mood is an area where you can trust your experience and experimentation. When you find the music that energizes you, relaxes you, or makes you happy, keep it ready for when you need it.

    Music For Intelligence

The right kind of music can spur your brain to higher levels of imagination and ingenuity. Research and studies have shown that it can be used as a tool to train and sharpen the brain. In one study, three-year-olds were split into two groups. The group was divided in two, with the first being deprived of music. The second group was made to study piano and singing.

Eight months later the musical three-year-olds were much better at solving puzzles. They also scored 80% higher in spatial (space) intelligence than the other group. Earlier, there were unsubstantiated claims that music, especially classical music, will enhance the studying and learning process.

Hopefully there will be more research. In the meantime there's no reason not to do your own experimentation. It is interesting to note that Stephen King allegedly listens to rock music while doing his books, so that could mean that some people does work better with background music.

    Music as a Brainwave Catalyst

Want to listen to some music, and get smarter, or have instant easy meditation? A method of lulling yourself into a meditative state is listening to music rigged to entrain your brainwaves. Music is embedded with beats and pulses that entrain your brain waves to a specific frequency. Play the CD or whatever is the carrier in the appropriate device and the brain is suppose to react positively. Is this science? Partly.

Different mental states have different brain wave frequencies. Daydreaming and light meditation take place in the "Alpha" range of frequencies, for example. So if you listen to music containing beats at a frequency of 10 Hz you will generate more brainwaves at a 10 Hz frequency and enter a relaxed Alpha mental state. Has this been proven?

Evidence does seem to bear this out, where studies have shown that music and meditative practice are the two products that can make a person feel calm and serene. Further studies ought to validate some of the effects and disprove the more absurd allegations.

You cannot be faulted if you have reservations until more proof comes around to erase your doubts. At the same time, why not have a good time listening to music when studying and taking notice of its effect on you? Surely there is no harm in the music of Mozart.
