What Do I Need To Get Started Creating Beats?

The possibilities of making music at home for amateur musicians have really gotten popular, mostly due to advances in technology for home computers. It does not make a difference if you are a rapper or a guitar player or anything in between, you can create your own backing tracks, beats and instrumentals. Here are some tips for potential beat makers, along with a couple of answers to some questions you should have.

First things first, the major tool you will want for making beats at home is a computer system, and I'm going to toss out a guess that you presently have one. Alright, if your computer is fairly modern you should be fine - but if it is starting to become slow or to crash often, you should think about upgrading your system because most of the more advanced programs do require a powerful PC. Which leads us towards the first question...

What do I require to get started creating beats?

Prior to answering that question, you should think about how far you plan to go with your beat making. The best news is that, regardless of your aspirations, the first few things to do are pretty much the same. We've already established that you have a computer. After that, there are any number of hardware devices you may consider getting for your home studio. A few examples of the most popular ones are midi keyboards, cool drum pads and sampling machines, synthesizers, sequencers, mixers, a preamp, effects and more. It sounds confusing, and truly, it definitely can be.

The smartest idea for many people is to get started with a computer program that copies the uses of all the hardware that I listed above. There are several choices available depending on your budget, but no matter what your price limit is you will be able to find something suitable. Many budget programs do not have support for .wav samples, this is something you need to look out for. If they do not support .wav files (or "waves") you will not be getting studio quality sound. There exists some budget-priced programs that do, however, have support for .wav so you aren't out of luck! If you cannot tell the difference between low quality sound, and professional quality sound, that is okay.. You will know the difference shortly! Along with .wav support, make sure the program comes with a sample library otherwise you will not have everything that you need. A drum set, a sequencer and a mixer are all other features to look for in a software program. Bear in mind that pricy programs are generally more advanced, as well. It takes a lot of time to learn, since the professional programs are not meant for novices. With that in mind, let's move on to the next question you should ask yourself..

How much time to I need to devote to this, before I may start beat making?

This really depends on your choices. It will take you a long time to start beat making if you have a pile of hardware and software to learn to use first.. If you're starting off strictly with a user-friendly computer program, you won't need to learn to control all the additional hardware which should save you a ton of time. If you select a complete software package that also has sound libraries with an included drum machine and keyboard, it certainly will take you a lot less time. Make sure it includes a thorough instruction manual, it is even better if it comes with some video tutorials - in this case, you should be able to start making beats that very same day if you follow the guide. To tell you the truth, it really isn't all that hard to begin making beats when you are using the correct tools.
