Many people that want to learn how to play the guitar think that you just need to grab the instrument and start making music. It is not that simple. Firstly, you will need a guitar, and in general, having your own is a better option than borrowing one from a friend, or hiring one. A used instrument is a perfectly acceptable solution if you are on a budget and it is possible to buy a good quality used or new instrument at a reasonable price.

Of course, the two instruments also give out very different sounds when played, so before buying an instrument you should try to determine where your interests lie and what your style is. An electric guitar is of course an ideal choice for most aspiring rock stars, although an acoustic guitar is more universal and has wider appeal. Regardless, you will need a pick for your guitar.

A set of lessons for beginners is the next thing you need in order to learn how to play the guitar. You can take individual classes with an experienced guitar teacher. You can readily use DVD lessons online lessons or a detailed book guide.
These latter options are quite inexpensive, but you have to consider their drawbacks compared to the traditional learning method. The main problem with these lessons is that you do not get feedback on how you play. You may learn to positions your fingers in the wrong way and virtually ruin all your efforts.

At the beginning of the video, you will also learn how to replace the strings on your guitar. The last steps in these DVD's are learning different fret techniques and the chord shortcuts in order to help with learning the easier way of plucking, as well as, strumming of your guitar.
